CRPO exam prep: how to choose a course or practice tool

Facts checked against CRPO's and Ontario's official sources on October 22, 2026.

There is no official CRPO exam prep course. CRPO's Resource Manual says the materials a candidate uses to prepare are entirely at their discretion, and COMPASS, which builds the exam, does not endorse any author or text. Start with the free official material, then choose any paid prep by one test: does it reproduce the real format, explain every option's weight from official sources, and let you practise full simulations against the clock in the language you will write in? This guide sets out the options and what to check, without ranking providers.

Free and official: start here

ResourceWhat you get
Registration Examination Resource ManualThe format, the scoring scale from +3 to -3, the blueprint, exam-day rules and a sample simulation (Lucia) with a scored example
Entry-to-Practice Competency ProfileThe competencies the exam is aligned to; the manual calls it most helpful to preparation
Professional Practice Standards and Code of EthicsThe rules most options turn on
Jurisprudence ManualRegulation, the Standards and the Ontario laws in one document
COMPASS navigational tutorialA walk-through of the exam platform, sent to every booked writer once the booking window closes

All of it is on crpo.ca, in English and French, except the tutorial, which COMPASS sends directly. Free CRPO exam resources lists every free option, official and not, in one place.

The COMPASS practice exam

COMPASS sells an optional practice exam that you can only buy at the same time as your exam seat. It has four simulations, takes about 90 minutes, is single-use and has a defined administration window. At the end you see an overall Information Gathering score and an overall Decision Making score. It does not give item-by-item results or an answer key. Its value is practice on the real platform; it will not tell you why an option was right or wrong.

Courses, workshops and practice platforms

Independent providers offer group courses, workshops led by clinicians or supervisors, one-to-one coaching and online practice platforms. Prices and formats vary widely. Your own clinical supervision and a study group cost nothing extra, and the Resource Manual notes that supervision notes and case discussion are useful preparation.

What to check before you pay

  • Format fidelity. Simulations with Information Gathering and Decision Making sections, SELECT AS MANY and CHOOSE ONLY ONE, options weighted +3 to -3, and selections that cannot be undone. Practice that uses ordinary multiple-choice questions trains a different skill.
  • A reason for every weight. You learn from the options you did not choose as much as from the ones you did. Each option should carry its weight and a reason tied to a standard, a law or a competency.
  • Official sources. Explanations should cite CRPO's Standards, the Competency Profile and Ontario statutes, current to the June 2026 Resource Manual.
  • Two totals. Feedback should show Information Gathering and Decision Making separately, since you must pass both.
  • Full timed mocks. At least some practice should be ten simulations in three hours, with nothing revealed until the end.
  • Your language. The exam is offered in English and French. If you will write in French, check that the material uses the OPAO's own French terms, not a translation. See writing the CRPO exam in French.
  • Honest claims. No prep can contain real exam items, and none is endorsed by CRPO or COMPASS. Treat a promise of "actual exam questions" or a guaranteed pass as a warning sign.
  • A free look first. Check that you can try a full case before paying, and how cancellation works.

Where the lab on this site fits

The CRPO Exam Lab is one of these independent options, made by Canada Therapy & Wellness and not affiliated with CRPO or COMPASS. Its practice cases follow the exam's format, show every option's weight and reason after each section, and include full timed mock exams with separate IG and DM totals, in English and French. The study library, one full practice case and a 10-minute diagnostic are free without an account; the rest is by subscription at CAD 39 a month or CAD 99 every 3 months. The best way to judge it, or any other option, against the checklist above is to try the free practice case and the free diagnostic.

The library module The Eight-Week Study Plan shows how to combine free and paid practice over two months, and what to study lists the official documents in order.

Common questions

Do I need a prep course to pass the CRPO exam?

No. CRPO reports an 85% average pass rate over the past eight years, and the official material is free. A course or practice tool helps most with timed simulation practice and with the reasons behind each weight.

Does CRPO recommend any prep provider?

No. The Resource Manual leaves study materials to the candidate, and COMPASS does not endorse any author or text.

When can I buy the COMPASS practice exam?

Only at the same time as you buy your exam seat, during the booking window. It is single-use and must be taken within its set timeframe.

Is there French-language CRPO exam prep?

The official documents (the Resource Manual, the Competency Profile, the Standards and the Jurisprudence Manual) are all published in French. Check any paid option for full French content before you buy.
