Questions and answers
The CRPO exam, answered

What candidates ask most about the CRPO Registration Examination, with CRPO's own rules. Dates, fees and other figures that change are on CRPO's exam page; each answer says where. Each answer also links to the part of the lab that goes deeper.
What is the CRPO Registration Examination?
It is the exam a Qualifying registrant passes to become a Registered Psychotherapist in Ontario. Its formal name is the Canadian Professional Standard for Counselling and Psychotherapy (CPSCP): Entry-to-Practice Competency Assessment. It is developed and administered by COMPASS Centre for Examination Development, written on a computer, and offered in English and French. It is a simulation-based assessment of clinical judgement, not a multiple-choice knowledge test.
What is the format of the CRPO exam?
Ten simulations in three hours. Nine are scored and one is an unscored pilot you cannot identify. Each simulation opens with a scenario and runs through about five to eight sections. Information Gathering sections ask what you need to know (select as many as you judge useful). Decision Making sections ask what you would do (select as many, or choose only one). Clicking an option reveals a response, a selection cannot be undone, and a section you skip cannot be answered later.
How is the CRPO exam scored?
Every option carries a weight from +3 (of central importance to good client care) to -3 (gravely damaging to client care), and harmful selections subtract from your total. Information Gathering and Decision Making are scored as two separate totals and you must reach the passing score in both: strength in one does not make up for the other. The passing score is set for each version of the exam by COMPASS's committee and is not a fixed percentage. You receive a pass or fail result, not a grade.
What is the CRPO exam pass rate?
CRPO publishes its average pass rate over recent years on its exam page, and it has been high: most candidates pass. Because Information Gathering and Decision Making must each be passed on their own, a strong total in one strand does not protect you from failing the other.
How much does the CRPO exam cost?
The exam fee is paid directly to COMPASS, and the full fee is paid again for each attempt. It is not refunded if you miss the exam, and COMPASS keeps a processing fee on any refund after a withdrawal. CRPO's exam page gives the current amounts and any tax on them. COMPASS also sells an optional, single-use practice exam when you buy your seat.
When is the CRPO exam offered?
At set sittings, each held over several consecutive days; in recent years there has been a spring and a fall sitting. CRPO's exam page lists the dates of upcoming sittings, the registration cut-off, the booking window and the deadline for final program completion documents for each one. Accommodation requests are due well before the exam (CRPO currently asks for about three months).
Who is eligible to write the CRPO exam?
You must be registered as an RP (Qualifying), have completed your psychotherapy program (CRPO must receive the final transcript or credential assessment directly from the institution or agency), and be registered by the cut-off date announced for the sitting. Your clinical hours do not affect eligibility.
How many times can you write the CRPO exam?
Three times at most. The first attempt must be within 24 months of your registration as an RP (Qualifying), and the third no later than five years after it. After a second failure you complete CRPO's Supervision Tool with your supervisor and develop a learning plan for the Examination Committee. You complete it to the Registrar's satisfaction before writing again, and send CRPO evidence of completion within six months of the plan's approval. After a third failure your certificate of registration expires.
Is the CRPO exam written online?
Yes, from home or another private room, with remote proctoring by MonitorEDU. You need a computer (no tablets, phones, Chromebooks or Linux) running Windows or macOS with Google Chrome, a webcam, administrator rights, and a mobile phone as a second camera, plus a mouse that is not Bluetooth (wired or with a USB receiver) or a trackpad: every Bluetooth device is prohibited. Do the MonitorEDU pre-exam check at least five days before, on the computer you will use and with the internet check in the room where you will write. Have two pieces of government ID, at least one with a photo, and your CRPO unique identification number, and log in at least 15 minutes before your start time. Limited in-person seating exists for candidates whose accommodation needs rule out remote proctoring.
Does the waiting queue count toward the three hours?
No. After you log in through the link in your MonitorEDU booking confirmation, you wait in a queue while the proctor checks you in, longer at busy times or if the technical and identification steps were not done in advance. The three hours begin only once the exam is launched. Do not leave the queue and sign in again: you lose your place.
What if something goes wrong before or during the exam?
If an unforeseen circumstance such as illness, injury or the death of a relative arises immediately before the exam, email CRPO at [email protected] as soon as possible; staff will confirm your options. If something happens during the exam, tell the proctor immediately, note it in the feedback survey at the end of the exam, and report it to CRPO at [email protected] within the time CRPO's exam page sets (currently 7 days). Reporting at the time matters if you later appeal.
Who do you contact about the CRPO exam?
General exam questions: CRPO at [email protected], after reading CRPO's exam page. Technical requirements for remote proctoring: MonitorEDU's live chat. Changes to your booking: COMPASS at [email protected].
How long do CRPO exam results take?
Some weeks after the exam, by email; CRPO's exam page gives the expected timing. COMPASS sends a one-page score report as a PDF, and CRPO sends a results notice with your next steps. If you pass and your hours are already approved, that notice confirms you can apply for the category transfer.
Can you appeal a failed CRPO exam?
Yes, if you failed and believe an incident affected the fairness of the exam. You appeal to CRPO's Examination Committee under its Examination Appeals Policy, in writing with supporting evidence, within the time the policy allows after results are issued (currently 30 days). The grounds are compassionate (unforeseen circumstances such as a bereavement), medical (a sudden, unforeseeable illness) and process irregularities (for example a software, connection or power failure, or a proctor not following protocol). Not grounds: exam content or format (such as skipping a simulation or being unable to de-select a response), your own navigation errors, queuing delays, technical or room requirements you did not meet, and circumstances that were not unforeseen or did not arise immediately before or on exam day. A granted appeal cancels the result so the attempt does not count; it never turns a fail into a pass.
What happens after you pass the CRPO exam?
To move from RP (Qualifying) to RP, CRPO currently requires the pass, 450 direct client contact hours and 100 clinical supervision hours, both approved by CRPO staff, with at least half the supervision individual or dyadic. Accepted hours show on the Practice information page of your CRPO account. Once all three are met you apply on the Transfer request page and pay the category transfer fee plus the difference in registration fee for the RP category for the rest of the registration year (CRPO's fee schedule gives the current amounts), within the time CRPO allows after you become eligible (currently 30 days). Hours take weeks to review and cannot be expedited, so if you have them, submit the documentation before results come out. Keep practising under clinical supervision until CRPO confirms the transfer requirements are met.
How should I prepare for the CRPO exam?
Practise the format itself, not just the content: read the scenario, decide each option on the principle it serves before you see the response, and keep Information Gathering tied to the purpose in the stem. Study the Practice Standards, the Code of Ethics, consent, confidentiality and mandatory reporting, then sit timed simulations and at least one full mock exam. This lab offers original practice cases, a study library, decision diagrams, a week-by-week plan and full mock exams, in English and French.
What does the CRPO Exam Lab cost?
The CRPO Exam Lab is a paid subscription. The study library, one full practice case (Amrit) and a 10-minute diagnostic are open to everyone without one. A subscription, billed every month or every three months, opens every other practice case, the learning cards, the interactive lessons, short sets, My focus and the full mock exams. Current prices, in Canadian dollars, are on the subscribe page, and you can cancel any time.
Can I cancel?
Yes, any time. Open Account, then Subscription and billing, choose Manage or cancel, then Cancel subscription on the Stripe page. You keep the full lab until the end of the period you paid for, and your progress stays with your account; the library’s modules stay open to you.
Is the CRPO Exam Lab part of CRPO?
No. It is an independent preparation platform from Canada Therapy & Wellness, not affiliated with or endorsed by the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario. Its simulations are original and reproduce no examination content. Confirm dates, fees and requirements on crpo.ca.
